about

Beast of Burden:
The origin of this piece; There is an 8-string African harp called a nyatiti native to the area of Kenya.
In the bowls of a university music department library, there are some notated melodic patterns (specifically 3 patterns) of the nyatiti instrument.
Edmend Haleway then translated those patterns to bass, deciding on a particular order of the three patterns and then simply cycling thru the 3 patterns an indefinite number of times.
In the initial tracking (drums, bass & guitar) we just improvised, cycling through the 3 patterns in a particular order, but allowing for diverting from the starting order and overlapping; Louk writing & arranging the horns.
